WONI BOY: The Small Freedom of Being Yourself

Aus dem englischen Original übersetzt.

Being yourself sounds simple until you remember how much practice you have had at adjusting. You know when to lower your voice, when to shorten the explanation, when to pretend you are less interested than you are. Sometimes those adjustments help us get along. Sometimes we keep making them long after we have forgotten what we wanted to say.

WONI BOY lives in that space. In his story, the world asks him to be quieter, more sensible and easier to place. He tries to blend in. Each attempt costs him a little more of himself.

We did not want his turning point to depend on becoming successful enough to earn permission. There is no grand transformation. He stops apologising for being different, and starts recognising the qualities he had been trying to suppress. Curiosity becomes a compass. Imagination becomes a playground.

The illustrations give that freedom somewhere to live. At the decks, Woni Boy gets completely into the music. With yarn and a butterfly, attention takes a small detour. Among bubbles, he has a world of his own. The three images allow playfulness to sit beside the deeper feeling behind the collection.

Beautifully entangled. My mind has its own orbit. We chose words that leave room for a smile. A wandering thought does not need to be turned into a solemn declaration every time. Sometimes a cat and a small red full stop can say enough.

There is affection behind Woni Boy too. Woni Boy is connected with our much-loved cat, Beasty Boy, and his name with my late father, Woni. That personal history can live beside the character story. It gives the collection a place in a real family, while the illustrations remain open to the people who recognise something of themselves in them.

The story does not pretend that Woni Boy has everything figured out. His mind races. He gets lost in thought. Some days he wonders what he is doing. Knowing who you are does not require certainty about every next step.

We wanted that same openness in the clothing. There are no gender gates to pass through. Choose a long sleeve, a tee or a hoodie because you like its shape and the way you want to wear it. Front and back versions offer different ways to carry the artwork; neither asks you to perform a particular kind of confidence.

Belonging becomes easier to imagine when it does not depend on replacing yourself. That is the small freedom at the centre of WONI BOY. You can be curious, contradictory, playful, unfinished—and still arrive as yourself.
