The Noise Between

51….

 · 2 min read

A heart-shaped birthday dessert with flowers and candles.

And starting over. Not because I burned out. Not because I was stuck. But because I’ve had to make peace with something I was born with. Most people didn’t know. I’ve lived with a physical condition since birth. And for most of my life, I worked around it.

Adapted. Overcompensated. Learned how to stay ahead, show up, and keep going, even when my body quietly asked for a pause I couldn’t afford to give. I built a vegan business from scratch. Had to close it at the start of the pandemic. I taught: English to adults, how to use Apple devices. I worked in fast-paced retail. I stood for hours, delivered trainings, led creative sessions.

I was great at what I did, and I loved it. But in the background, the truth stayed the same: I was doing something my body was never really built for. Eventually, it caught up with me. Not as burnout. Not as emotional exhaustion. But as a clear physical line I could no longer cross. So I left my job in March 2025. Not because I was ready to launch a new idea.

Not because I had some shiny pivot lined up. But because I had to choose my health, maybe for the first time ever. I hadn’t had anything else lined up, but because I couldn’t ignore what my body and mind were trying to tell me any longer.

I chose health.

I chose truth. And now I’m choosing movement, one uncertain step at a time. Hoping to build my own empire along the way. And let me tell you: starting over at 51 is a strange place to stand. You have all this experience. All this life. All these skills. And yet, when your body says “you can’t do that anymore,” it can feel like everything is suddenly up in the air.

But here’s what’s also true:

I’m not starting from scratch. I’m starting from strength, just a different kind than I used to measure. I’ve never been someone who waited around. I’ve always taken action. Tried things. Built things. Reinvented when I had to. This isn’t about fear. This is about alignment. This time, I’m starting with honesty. I’m building a life that supports my health, not fights against it. I’m letting go of needing to prove my worth through exhaustion or endless standing.

This time, it’s about trust, in myself. In my timing. In the idea that doing things differently isn’t failure, it’s wisdom. So to every human in their 40s, 50s, or beyond who’s facing a change, whether it’s physical, emotional, or circumstantial: You’re not late. You’re not broken. You’re just being re-routed toward something more sustainable. More aligned. More you.

People love the idea of starting over. Until they actually have to do it. With a tired heart. A healing body. No blueprint. No applause.

But here’s what I know:

I’m not lost. I’m becoming. Again. And maybe that’s the quiet revolution no one talks about: The courage to begin again, not because you have to prove something. But because you’re finally done proving anything, other than always showing up for yourself. You don’t need permission. You need to believe that your timing is still divine. This isn’t your ending.

This is your return to yourself.
